Let's Lay Down a Few Ground Rules . . .

Sorry to be a drag, but we can't have anarchy, right? So we've got to have a few simple rules. . . .

  1. This art contest is open to any artist who works in our accepted mediums.
You do NOT have to be a current FASO customer

  2. This online art contest is for paintings, digital works, fine art photography, mixed media and sculpture.
Due to the ambiguous copyright status of AI Generated art (DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, etc), we do not allow you to enter AI Generated art. We plan to add a category for AI Art when the copyright status of AI Art has been more clearly decided and clarified.

  3. Artworks may be created with physical or digital media
(Just be sure it's an original - if digital - painting on an ipad counts, mixed media or enhanced photography counts. Photos with simple filters applied don't)

  4. Registration is Free

  5. Your first entry each month is Free

  6. Additional entries each month are $14
(Exception, if you are a FASO customer there is a special deal.)

  7. You may enter as many artworks each month as you would like

  8. You may enter artworks that have won art contest awards in other shows

  9. It's OK to enter artworks that have already been sold

  10. You may submit the same artwork in different months.
    (Exception, see next item)

  11. If your artwork wins an award in our artwork contest, it will not be eligible to win in subsequent months.
(You'll have to create another winner. . . we believe you can!)
Note - being in the FAV15% does not count as winning an award.

  12. ALL entries (not just winners) will be displayed on this website. Each entry becomes part of the public, historical online contest catalog and will not be removed at a later date.

  13. There is no size restriction.

  14. No restriction on subject matter, just keep it clean please.

  15. You may upload whatever image size you are comfortable sharing
(We suggest a minimum of 600 pixels on the longest side so the judge has enough resolution to discern details)

  16. A juror will select the winners each month.

  17. The criteria used to judge the different mediums will vary per medium. Overall, here are some of the criteria used in the jurying process: Composition, Content, Line and Shape, Color, the Quality of Light, Texture (both visual and physical), Movement or Flow, Values, Technical Skill and last but not least, art that tells a story, evoking a specific emotion.

  18. Your artwork must be your own original concept and not a copy of anyone else's copyrighted material
(If your image infringes upon another's copyright it will be disqualified)

  19. You may only submit your own artworks that you, personally created.
(we reserve the right to demand proof that is your original artwork created solely by you....if it's not then your entry will be disqualified....and other bad stuff will happen [ominous music here])

  20. Make sure that your artwork is signed and that the signature is visible in the image you upload
(This helps us with verification - see previous rule)

  21. Each artist is allowed to win up to 2 art contest awards each month.
(one Top 3 award and one 4-10 award).

  22. If an artist1 is awarded a cash award by a judge, artist 2, and the winning artist1 is later a judge, then winning artist1 may not award a cash award to artist2 if it has been less than 12 months

  23. After an artist has won the best of show, that artist may not be awarded a cash award for a period of 3 months and may not be awarded another best of show for 6 months
(But can still win non-cash awards. This rule was not in effect prior to 8/1/2010)

  24. You will not have to provide the artwork physically, so you don't worry about having to ship it.

  25. Artworks may be submitted until midnight, central time on the last day of the month.
(No artworks will be accepted past the deadline, but hey if you miss it, there's always next month!)

  26. All submissions must be made through this website, email submissions and/or physical submission can't be accepted.

  27. The decision of the jury and the judge is final.

  28. By entering this art competition, you are granting us a non-exclusive perpetual license to reproduce images of your artwork
(on our websites, newsletters, and social media accounts and those of our promotional partners ...with credit and links to you, of course).

  29. Must be 18 or older, to be eligible for awards.

  30. All cash awards will be paid via Paypal.
(This means that if you win, you'll need a Paypal account and will be responsible for any fees Paypal charges on receiving money. If you cannot accept Paypal, the only alternative we can offer is credit toward FASO website hosting fees. You must provide your Paypal account within 90 days of winning or your award will be forfeited. We will notify you of your award by email, but are not responsible if it does not arrive or you do not see it. It is your responsibility to check the contest website to see if you've won an award.)

  31. By entering the competition, you agree to abide by all rules.

  32. Competition beginning and ending dates are listed on the home page of this website.

  33. Awards winners will be announced and listed on this site on the last day of the month following the contest.
(We try to post winners by the 20th of the month, but no promises. Officially we will post the by midnight on the last day of the month following the contest.)

  34. If we are unable to communicate with the announced judge and obtain his/her judging results, we will appoint a substitution judge.
There will be no refunds if this happens.
(As of January 2021 this has never happened during more than six years of monthly contests).

  36. We believe in respecting fellow artists and one another's artworks - therefore, You may not criticize, make derogatory or otherwise inappropriate comments anywhere on FASO or in any other public forum about any other artist or in the BoldBrush contest (or his/her works). Doing so will result in disqualification of your art from the contest, along with termination of your FASO account.

  37. Please, No whining

  38. Don't forget to have fun
