Other Artists Say:

Primarily, a self taught artist, West is committed to consistent growth and development in his skills. He has worked diligently, and has studied with a variety of artists from many different genres. He studied with the fine realist Robert K. Rourk of The Winstanley-Rourk Gallery in Dennis, Cape Cod, MA. Robert thought him “impatient”, but “with the drive to become a very good artist”. West found the Southwest artist Johanna LaRance from Taos, NM living her retirement in a small cottage by the sea and convinced her to work with him in many two hour sessions. “ I have never seen someone do so many wrong things in a painting,” she once said of his earliest work.

Next West worked with Maggie Lesignieur, the abstract colorist whose work was all the rage on the lower Cape during his youth. She helped him explore and understand color. She once chastised him for using “way too many grays”. Then, West found Charles Kello, the renowned Norfolk impressionist, whose loose spontaneous interpretations are highly collected. They worked together over a couple of years. He once mused, “West's talent is only outweighed by his ambition. One day the two will meet.”

Biography

West D. Waters was born in Washington, D.C. in 1957. In the early 1960's his family moved to Wellfleet, Cape Cod, MA. where they established a critically acclaimed summer stock theater company called The Fisherman's Players. From very early on, West was immersed in the arts. Surrounded by actors, musicians, writers, directors and the many accomplished artists of lower Cape Cod, his family life was a never ending parade of who's who. So it was of no surprise to anyone that at the age of 50, West suddenly gave up his successful retail company to work part time and “invest” as he termed it, “in himself”…. and a late life art career.
