An example of fine art by Virginia Gladding

Photo of Virginia Gladding

Virginia Gladding spent most of her life in and around the military thanks to her Dad’s career and her own 24 years in the Air Force.  It was a wonderful opportunity to live abroad and to enjoy the fabulous art and architecture of Europe.  Virginia always had a love for art, however it would be years before she could actively pursue her passion.  Virginia earned a BA from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia in Foreign Affairs, and a Master’s Degree in German from Vanderbilt University.  After graduating, she worked as a Medical Illustrator at the Vanderbilt Medical Center and began to develop her interest in oil painting.  Virginia participated in numerous exhibits and shows throughout Tennessee. In 1979, Virginia spent the next 24 years serving in the US and overseas so her career left little time for artwork.  In 1995, she came to Newport, RI to attend the Naval War College and loved the area so much, she decided that New England was where she eventually wanted to establish roots.  After retiring to Jamestown in 2002, Virginia was finally able to pick up the paintbrush and start to seriously pursue her long standing interest in oil painting and design.  She  enjoys painting the wonderful seascapes and landscapes in and around Conanicut Island and they’re a constant inspiration.
In 2005, Virginia graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) with a certificate in Interior Design.  She has taken numerous art classes at both RISD and the Newport Art Museum, as well as workshops with Studio Incamminati.   Virginia has served on the Board of the Conanicut Art Association, and is a member of the Newport Art Museum and the Wickford Art Association.
Her painting “Opposite’s Attract” was selected to be part of the juried 2011 Newport Art Museum Annual [...]
