Vern Simpson is a painter and sculptor who works out of his studio located on Pender Island, British Columbia. Vern's landscapes are intense in colour, edgy, with strong movement, texture, and painterly qualities. Vern is also well-known for his iconic "Gassy Jack" sculpture which stands in Vancouver's historic Gastown district and is a favourite of locals and tourists alike.
Educated first at the University of British Columbia, Vern majored in art and graphics and subsequently won a scholarship to Mexico's  prestigious Instituto Allende where he painted the large historic mural "Independencia" for his Masters of Fine Arts. Located at Instituto Allende, "Independencia" is a colourful early example of Vern's acrylic painting and remains pure and unchanged to this day.
Vern is equally at home on the Pacific Coast, or among the desert foothills and grasslands of his native South Okanagan as well as those in Alberta and south to Mexico.
Vern's colour-driven landscapes hang in corporate, civic, university and private collections throughout North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. He is currently completing a life sized statue in copper for the Gastown flagship location of a major global retailer... a second "Gassy Jack"!
