Biography

I started to seriously pursue art when my wife and I retired to Mexico in 2006, and I have taken drawing and watercolor classes from some excellent teachers here in Querétaro, a city founded in 1521 in Central Mexico with incredible architecture and light. After studying drawing, watercolor, acrylic expressionism (after Chucho Reyes), and batik, making my own acrylics and watercolors from scratch, I am now concentrating on bold and loose pastels. At each stage I have learned something new that I have been able to apply to the next stage, developing what I hope is a loose expressionist style.

I see my paintings as an expression of my feelings about a subject while leaving room for the viewer to personally interpret what I present. I love color and light, but the exact color is not as important as the value; and by playing with warmth and coolness, lost and found edges, and light and dark forms, I express my feeling of a scene. As they say, a painting tells you more about the artist than the subject.

I want the viewer to participate in my paintings by using his/her own imagination to fill in the details. I do appreciate the craftsmanship necessary to paint super realistic images, but I just prefer leaving something up to the viewer's imagination.
