    I paint mostly in oils, using fairly traditional techniques, which include extensive glazing and layering.  I work very slowly, first trying to get a sense of the painting's subject  through sketches and rough drawings, then carefully working out the nuances of colour, light and composition. etc. as I paint. I try to bring out the ground-essence, or what Chinese landscape painters called the ch'i -yun (resonating spirit) of each painting. It's always a messy process, with much trial and error, but done with the hope that something authentic will emerge in the end. 
     I was born in the US but have lived in Europe for many years.  I now spend my time between Kinsale, Ireland and Guaro, [...]
