Biography

Tami Phelps is an Alaskan mixed-media artist residing in Anchorage since 1970. She taught in the Anchorage School District at Denali Montessori public elementary school for twenty years, emphasizing creativity and art. She is now a full-time artist, working in her home studio loft. She creates work primarily in cold wax medium, often involving assemblage. She received the 2017 Alex Combs Artist Award from Bunnell Street Arts Center, Homer, Alaska, and was selected as the sole Alaska Artist in the 2019 exhibit of 50 States / 200 Artists, Museum of Encaustic Art, Santa Fe, NM. The cover of CIRQUE Literary Journal for the North Pacific Rim featured her cold wax piece: Under the Tundra (2017). The permanent collection of the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center includes her hand tinted photographic work. The Encaustic Art Institute, Santa Fe, NM selected her cold wax triptych, Undo Restraint, for inclusion in Melting Pot/Melting Point  (her response to the call for art, curated by Fancisco Benitez). The Museum of Encaustic Art, Santa Fe, NM, has now included her cold wax painting, Undo Restraint, in their permanent collection (2018). She has been an invited workshop presenter for the Alaska Art Educators Conference (Girdwood, AK, 2013), and presented art workshops to Anchorage School District and the University of Alaska Anchorage students. Summer 2020 will be Tami’s fourth Artist-in-Residency at McKinley Chalet Resort, Denali National Park, Alaska, where she demonstrates cold wax painting, and leaves a work for their permanent collection. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Alaska Photographic Center and is co-president of the Alaska Chapter of International Encaustic Artists, AKWax. Her exhibition record includes 39 Juried and Invitational Exhibitions in Alaska, Washington, Colorado and New Mexico; 17 Invitational Solo Exhibits in Anchorage; 10 Invitational Group Art Exhibits, in Alaska; and 14 Community-Benefit Exhibits.
