Biography

Tami Phelps  - Art Bio

“I come from a creative family,” notes Tami Phelps, Alaska cold wax artist, “originally from Nebraska and Colorado, but since the 1970s, Alaska has provided my inspiration and sense of place.”  A Montessori teacher for two decades, she says the methodology grounded in nature and observation from Maria Montessori creatively sifts through her work now that she’s devoted fulltime to art.
Nature, time, place, emotional connections, relationships, and music (her dad is a musician) underlay the designs of her abstract, impressionistic, and occasional representational work, primarily in cold wax medium.  Her fondness for texture, cloth, and vintage objects, add a 3-D element to her work. “When I travel, I find myself in local antique stores, (a passion acquired from my mother) collecting items, not knowing how these pieces of lived-life will become part of my vision for future artwork.”

Cold wax art derived from encaustic wax art about two hundred years ago in Europe.  Tami first studied encaustic painting, but soon embraced cold wax as her preferred medium.  Her mentors include some of the finest cold wax artists in Alaska and the U.S., including Lisa Pressman and Janice Mason Steeves, which led to a workshop with Rebecca Crowell and Jerry McLaughlin in Drezzo, Italy, 2017. Rather than trying to imitate their work, she has embraced the inspiration they have all shared with her as she develops and expands her own style of cold wax painting, sometimes including assemblage.

Tami’s art is included in the permanent collections of the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center in Alaska, and the Museum of Encaustic Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her work was selected as the sole Alaska artist in the 50 States/200 Artists exhibit and publication, Museum of Encaustic Arts, Santa Fe, NM, 2019.  Recent juried national and international exhibits include Metamorphosis, Tubac Center of the Arts, Tubac, AZ, 2021; Lost Words, Northwind Art, Port Townsend, [...]
