Biography



Overview
Susan Williams studied at Kingston University and the Royal Academy, London.  She makes site-responsive installations that take the form of ethereal masses.  Her process involves interacting with nature, light, air and space to reflect the meanings of a place.  Susan uses materials from everyday life and is inspired by the need to find meaning in our lives.
Susan has won national and international residencies including the Vermont Studio Center and Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts, Wyoming.  Awarded membership to the Royal Society of Sculptors, Susan has shown her work throughout the UK and abroad.  Exhibitions include lakeside installations in Toledo, Spain and Laugarvatn, Iceland and exhibiting with the Stadtmuseum, Germany and Geumgang Nature Art Biennial, Korea.  A Londoner from birth, Susan has lived and worked in the town of Kettering, England, for the last seven years.
My Statement
Art to me is empowerment.  It is the place I go to manage the darker places of my childhood, sometimes revisited as an adult.  When I make work I unconsciously revisit this experience by breaking down, chopping everything up and then making it whole again.  Now it's become my home, my safe place.  I have learnt to appreciate everything around me and value how amazing life is.  My inspiration comes from the ordinary, the everyday and the need to find meaning in our  lives.
 
I work with site responsive installation, video, photography and numerous media.  My work takes the form of energy fields unexpectedly made visible, with a core theme of renewal, linking to environmental issues and spirituality in its broadest sense.  I work on site, exploring the in-built properties of the materials and the space itself, developing ideas and associations as the work progresses.  Daily experiments create an intimacy with the light, specific shapes and features and more broadly the experience of a place and [...]
