     Susan Volk Stanley grew up in Maryland with a passion for horses and its beautiful countryside. She was recognized early on for her artistic talents and began selling her artwork before leaving high school. Susan studied painting at Guilford College in North Carolina and graduated from Goucher with expanded study in photography and film. With an ability to use the creative process in both art and design she began a free lance career as a set designer and prop stylist for print and commercial advertising.
     In the mid 80's Susan made the move to the West to pursue work as a set decorator, designer and art director, expanding into episodic television and movie work in addition to opening a set design and special event company geared to the corporate theater market. Though being a hands on designer and running a company managing large national events proved lucrative, she never lost her love of the fine arts and painting. Her last film brought her to Prescott Arizona where she met artist Tom Dorr at The Phippen Art Show who told her about The Scottsdale Artists School and encouraged her to "find her fine art spirit". She began studying in earnest with some of today's most sought after painters including Matt Smith, Scott Christensen, Sherri McGraw, Ned Jacob, Jim Norton and Daniel Keys along with many other talented instructors and painters at the school. These workshops proved invaluable, leading Susan back to a place where she began, to her love of painting.
     In 2002 she sold her successful business, built a studio next to the barn and began combining her passion for painting with her love for her horses and adopted western lifestyle.
