Artist Susan Mikkelson

An example of fine art by Susan Mikkelson

Photo of Susan Mikkelson

Best known for her bright unique color pallet and forms, Susan Mikkelson a Colorado native, has been a functional potter since 1988. Although she dabbled in other clay techniques, ie; Raku, Salt and Wood firing, she ended up creating art that is beautiful enough to be displayed but more importantly used.
After transitioning from an international modeling career and expecting her first child, Susan spotted a small pottery studio in California and signed up for classes. Within two weeks she had keys to the place and her love of clay began.

"Everything happens for a reason and pottery found me"

Inspired by nature, both land and sea are depicted in her use of color. She has a blue line that she calls "moondance" and an earthy glaze reflective of the colors seen in the Rocky Mountains.  The dragonfly on many of her pieces reflect an experience shortly after her father died. "A dragonfly landed on a piece of my pottery at an art show and stayed with me for six hours. A visit from my dad?"
Mostly self taught, Susan uses all of her own glazes. Each pottery piece is oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe.
Susan enjoys working on her designs from her home in Littleton Colorado  that she shares with her husband and dog.
" An Artist is someone who turns her coat inside out and falls in love with the color of the lining"
