Artist, Susan Foley was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. Primarily self-taught, she started out as a representational artist. At an early age, her main focus was painting wall murals and decorative faux finishing techniques. Her interest in abstract art was sparked while living in the South of France where she was surrounded by a wide variety of artists. After moving to the English Cotswolds, Foley continued her experimentation with abstraction. During her time there, she created large scale sculptural wall installations in mixed media. Since moving back to Dallas, Foley has mentored with Steven Aimone and is painting full-time. She considers herself a non-objective artist, however she often recognizes memories of her time abroad in France and England within her paintings.
Since I can remember, I have had a never-ending desire to create. It is a true reflection of who I am. Painting fulfills this need and gives me endless ways of expressing myself.  My only goal in the beginning is to get out of my own way and let my subconscious lead me. I find that listening to music while I work is an essential part of this process and somehow helps me paint more intuitively. Once I get to what I call the ‘zone,’ I paint like my hair is on fire, fast and furious, sometimes with both hands simultaneously. It is a very physical process and can at times be exhausting, yet at the same time exciting and exhilarating. I strive to transfer my energy and emotion to my work in an effort to give it a sense of movement or aliveness. The end result is infused with the spirit and energy that I felt at the moment I created it.
