Biography

Susan Brott Lawson grew up in a small town in the Midwest, where her favorite pastime as a child was drawing.  This interest she attributes to her grandfather, who became an oil painter during his retirement years.

Susan moved to the San Francisco peninsula as an adult and soon became a regular hiker and appreciator of the California landscape. She has continued studying drawing and painting in watercolors, acrylics, and pastels throughout her adult life, with studies at UC Santa Cruz, the Palo Alto Art Center, and the Pacific Art League.

In 2004 she began painting in oils, with a particular interest in plein air landscape and still life done in the “alla prima” manner.   She has studied with the California Academy of Art and Ovanes Berberian, and is affiliated with the Bay Area Contemporary Plein Air Circle (BACPAC), a group of artists who enjoy painting together outdoors.  Her paintings are in private collections throughout the United States.

Susan is an admirer of the California impressionists, particularly Edgar Payne, Armin Hansen, and Jack Wilkinson Smith. She strives, as they did, to go beyond representation to capture the spirit of a particular time and place.
