Steven J. White, always drawing, always looking, a restless adventurer is a self taught artist. His traditional landscapes of Pennsylvania farms and woodlands, Schuylkill River Heritage areas and the Adirondack Mountains have awarded him with regional and national recognition.

Artist Background

Steven J. White was born in Chincoteague, Virginia and grew up in northern New Jersey. Steven graduated from Lyndhurst High School in 1970. Shortly after, he entered the military and served four years in the US Air Force.
Several years after his discharge he toured the United States creating a pictorial diary of his trip working in pen and ink, pastels, and charcoal. He drew the small towns, fields, lakes, forests, and streams he visited. In a year and a half his collection had grown to include four to five hundred drawings ranging in size from small sketches to full sheets.
While in Utah, a local gallery had directed Steven to a new business in town that was looking for art. He left his portfolio with the potential buyer for review. That night a fire broke out in the building and destroyed most of his work. As a result he temporarily lost his desire to express himself through his art.
In the mid-1980’s after viewing several collections of works by internationally known artists such as Zoltan Szabo, Murrey Wentworth, and Andrew Wyeth his lust for art was rekindled. In 1985, Steven began experimenting in watercolor. In 1986 his first painting, a seascape, was juried in at the Ridgewood Art Institute 6th Regional Open Jury Show in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The following year another watercolor was accepted into the show.
