Biography

S P West is an American artist who works primarily in oil and watercolor. Influenced greatly as a child by the works of Flemish, Italian and Spanish artists in the classical tradition, West sought her adult artist's life in museums and art galleries while studying Romance languages both at home and abroad.

Seeking an illustrator for a children's book she had written, West, at a loss for successfully explaining her artistic vision to several illustrators, turned to learning the "language of the brush" from a gifted watercolor artist, Jack Rowe. At their first meeting and after four straight hours of Rowe's sharing the techniques of his artistic lineage from Robert Henri, West completed her first painting and never looked back.

Working predominately in oil and following the rich tradition of realist painters, West paints the world as she sees it: vividly, richly and joyfully. Always learning, always pushing her medium, always striving to present her vision beautifully, West holds tight to the philosophy that it is the pursuit of perfection that engages the spirit.

West learns from artists that speak to her brush and has studied with John Cosby, Mary Whyte, Kathleen Dunphy, Robert Liberace, Kim English, Matt Smith, Daniel J. Keys,  and Joshua Been, among others. She pulls inspiration from both the stark beauty of the desert she once called home, and the forested trails of the San Bernardino mountains she explores with her three very happy dogs.
