Artist Bio

Smruti Kurse creates works in graphite-charcoal, oils, and pyrography (wood-burning).  By observing snapshots of her daily life, she captures the everyday aesthetic. Her compositions show that she’s grappled with the question: how can this life be authentically presented?  Her answer is to display a realistic point of view in monochrome medium anchored in imagination and the use of colors in her oil pieces.
What appeals to Smruti is capturing a moment in time where the actual event has yet to take place or has just ended: moments evocative of atmosphere and suspense that are not part of a narrative thread. At times realistic and recognizable and at other points impressionistic, Smruti builds on what moves her in the moment.  Smruti lives and works in San Jose, California.

Artist Statement
The construct of art as mindful meditation, thoughtful and intentioned, drives my work as a pyrographer.  While I’m burning a piece of wood, I’m focussed on the subject of my work as well as the process; exploring the person or the object, to bring an attentiveness and consideration into what I’m creating.   Each piece in my hands represents a moment and I work to honor that moment, the practice of my art piece, as well as the subject of it.
