‘There is so much in the world around us to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination. Most fascinating for me has always been the human face, with its unique capacity for character and communication. This fascination has combined with a love of drawing and a keen desire to explore the effects of light, to form a passion for portrait painting.'
-Ruth Fitton
Ruth is a portrait and figurative painter based in Yorkshire, UK.
She has been painting professionally since 2012, and her works vary from intimate portrait vignettes the size of a paperback, to life-sized figures with a mythical twist (this a collection of six works commissioned in 2018, now on permanent public display at Grantley Hall, Yorkshire).
Ruth’s paintings have garnered attention and praise across the globe, from the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in London (where she was awarded 1st Prize in the Winsor&Newton Young Artist Awards 2020); to the USA, where she won a Purchase Award from the Art Renewal Center in the ARC International Salon 2020. Collectors and clients alike enthuse over her ability to capture character on canvas.
Ruth works from a studio near Harrogate (UK). Between commissioned pieces, she works with models to create narrative figure paintings which allow her imagination free rein.
Recent events include exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London (Royal Institute of Oil Painters, 2019-20; Society of Women Artists, 2015-19), exhibition in the Mercer Gallery Autumn Open Exhibition (2019), exhibition by invitation at the Great Yorkshire Show (Harrogate, 2016-19) and the title of Artist in Residence at the Great North Art Show (Ripon, 2016).
Ruth is represented by Fine Art Commissions Ltd (St James's, London). For more information on how to commission a portrait painting, visit the contact page.
