Russells drive to choose art as a career came in early 2012 when he became aware of the Charles H Cecil Studio in Florence, Italy and found that their Senior Instructor and master artist, Nicholas Beer, also taught in Salisbury in the UK. Russell joined Nicholas at his studio in Sarum where he continued to learn the sight size method taught in Florence and applied the technique to both figurative and portrait drawing and then moving into oil painting.
Russell was passionately driven by the history of this proven technique and those artists that had previously utilised it so skilfully to create masterpieces and artwork of intense beauty.  Those artists that had employed aspects of this method include such luminaries as Anthony Van Dyke, Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds with further suggestions of use by Velasquez and Singer Sargent.
In 2016, Russell also studied with the Flemish Classical Atelier in Bruges, Belgium under the international artist Teresa Oaxaca and in 2017 studied with the internationally renowned sculptor Maudie Brady.
Creating beautiful and magnificent art begins with the ability to see the minutiae yet understand the impact that has on the larger vision, combined with the skills to apply the medium of choice to capture its essence. Learning that process is a life journey and Russells skills and subsequent work continues to develope.  It is the combination of developing this skill and technique and adding his own sense of style that enables and drives his art.
