The Artist Says:

Through the darkness, I see a light.  It draws me.  As I am engulfed, I paint all the emotions contained within.

Painting helps me battle the limitations that my physical disabilities impose. As I struggle to rise above the mire, I find solace in the oil. The brush glides across the canvas - lifting me up. Images float in front of me and I find God.

When I first started to draw, little did I know that oil painting would be my passion of pursuit.  The journey began with the exploration of oils and substrates, then came color - wonderful color, and, now, imagery.  The struggle to find a way to express the inner convictions of my soul is all encompassing and joyful.

Having started out later in life, I chose avenues which could afford me the most personally rewarding - skills needed to be learned and creative expression explored.  So, I spent several years taking courses at the Art Institute of Chicago.  They offered a broad palette of instruction: figure drawing, portrait drawing, color theory, oil painting, and abstract art.

In addition, I studied for a week with David Leffel at the Palette and Chisel's Workshop.  Finally, last year I spent a week in San Diego at the "Weekend with the Masters" workshop.

Biography

The struggle to find a way to express the inner convictions of my soul is all encompassing and joyful.  The barriers imposed upon my body by muscular dystrophy have forced me to find a way to live free of the daily encumbrances.  Painting has given me a new avenue upon which to travel.  I am free to explore.

Having started out later in life, I chose options which afforded me the most personally rewarding experiences - skills needed to be learned and creative expression explored.  So, I spent several years taking courses at the Art Institute of Chicago.  (Thanks to their handicap friendly environment, I was able to take classes.)  They offered a broad palette of instruction, including: figure drawing, portrait drawing, color theory, oil painting, and abstract art.  It was through my classes with Jose Agustin Andreu that I was exposed to the nuggets of "gold" that are part of every painting: the concept and how to express it through composition, color, line and imagery.

In addition, I studied for a week with David Leffel at the Palette and Chisel's Workshop.  Finally, last year I spent a week in San Diego at the "Weekend with the Masters" workshop.

The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, ArtFutura fundraiser and art show have encouraged me in my journey.
