Biography

ARTIST STATEMENT: My studio/gallery is located on seven acres of
woodland in the Door County peninsula near Lake Michigan and Green Bay.
The rugged beauty of this area is constantly changing and visually inspiring.
From the soft rose evening skies, bright sun reflecting off the bay, to the
somber mystery of the dark woodlands, and the surprising, brilliant colors of
Autumn, I have a rich source of subject matter. When painting, I translate this
subject matter into my version of a contemporary landscape painting... pushing
color, design, and my loose painterly style to create something fresh and new.

BIOGRAPHY:  After receiving an M.A. in Art from the University of Illinois,
I taught art to high school students  in the Chicago suburbs. I discovered
Door County, Wisconsin, as a destination for natural beauty and a thriving
art scene. In 1990, I purchased a summer home in Ellison Bay, developed my
artwork, and opened Rob Williams Studio/Gallery, in 2004.

I paint in oils on stretched canvas in varied sizes up to 4x6 feet. I combine
plein air, outdoor painting, with photos, and sketches as springboards for
my compositions, using vivid color, and semi-abstracted shapes, to express
the mood of the place I am painting. My loose painterly style gives my work
freshness and energy.  I enjoy the creative process of landscape painting
because it allows me the freedom to transform nature into dramatic areas
of color, shape, texture, and space.
