The Artist Says:

Gantt Steele was originally trained as an architect, and later studied art in
Vienna, San Francisco, and in New York. Robert has had a long  career as an illustrator of books and
for Broadway theater. He has recently painted murals for a museum in New York
commemorating an eighteenth century burial ground in Manhattan. He has often
created paintings to assist with historic preservation efforts. He  recently painted, en plein air, scenes
of life in a small French town for Smithsonian Magazine. Robert  lives with his wife Alice and their two
grown children in Northern California.


History and Inspiration
My paintings are atmospheric landscapes, portraits, and still lifes.  I have painter for Broadway productions such as “Showboat”, and for Smithsonian Magazine, the National Park Service, numerous public Museums, and many private portraits.  I paint often from life.  I also paint to benefit historic architecture and archaeological preservation.
