Biography

"Artist Rita Curtis brings a treasure trove of creativity and skill to the table. Rita's bold landscape paintings never fail to capture the imagination of viewers -- drawing us in with a striking use of color. Her figure, portrait, and still life paintings are marked by the same level of vibrant intensity. These powerful works are a pleasure to observe." —Brian Sherwin, Editor of The Art Edge

I love to paint fast and loose. I want my paintings to look as though they were whipped out in a flash of inspiration. The truth is I work thoughtfully — designing, reworking, and simplifying so my work looks fresh.  I work mostly in the studio, but I also enjoy painting en plein air.

Though I am an impressionist, my background is classical. I studied with modern masters at the Art Student's League of New York, intellectual history at New York University, and literature and art in Perugia, Italy. My illustrations are in World Health Organization manuals around the globe, and images and colors from travels to Africa and Asia suffuse many of my paintings.

Recognition for my work has been growing steadily.  "The Writer" was given full page coverage in International Artist magazine and won a major award in the Fifteenth national Oil Painters of America show. My paintings have received awards in national competitions including The Artists magazine, Raymar Art, BoldBrush, and the Salmagundi Club. My landscape awards include Artists' Choice in Paint Annapolis (Maryland) and Best of Show at the Solomons (Maryland) plein air festival. I was the featured Artist at the 28th Annual Oxford Fine Arts Fair. My paintings are included in 100 Plein Air Painters of the Mid-Atlantic. I am a signature member of Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association (MAPAPA)>
