Artist Porter Smith-Thayer

An example of fine art by Porter Smith-Thayer

Born into a family of artists, Porter grew up surrounded by crayons, pencils, paint, brushes, music, dance and theater, so, unlike many high school classmates, there was no parental opposition to her double majoring in design and modern dance at Ohio University in Athens, her home town.  Upon graduation from O.U., she attended graduate drawing courses in Atlanta, Georgia, then pursued a career in graphic design, always keeping her toe in the fine arts.  After recently retiring from her own business, Graphic Presentations, Porter began taking oil painting classes, first in a weeklong workshop at Nimrod, and now with Robin Caspari, where she has learned to see color values, light and shadow, and the value of daily painting in a whole new way.  Recently she joined James River Art League  to immerse herself in painting and learning from others, as well as enjoying the company of artists in JRAL  and the Richmond, Virginia area.  She’s excited to share some of her work in art shows with others, to hear their critiques of her work and to learn as much as she can in the years ahead. She and her husband, Mac, live in Henrico County.
Porter's fascination with rusty parts from a variety of found objects during her travels has led her to try new ways of working with cloth, wood and metal.  The assemblages have come together through exploration. In other words, trial and error!
