The Artist Says:

“I paint to show my respond to surroundings in a way that I otherwise could not. My art draws on past experience of spending all my daylight hours on the seashore.  I use it to portray those things that delight me.  Watercolour is the perfect medium for me to capture the atmosphere and light of my local environment. I tend to focus on scenes of nature, be it our ever-changing coastline or flowers that I have grown in my garden. I show these things as I see them; striving to keep my paintings fresh and spontaneous with luminous colour.”

Collectors Say:

"Looking at the lovely paintings you just posted makes me yearn for beautiful Nova Scotia.  When I view your paintings I can smell the sea air, feel the wind blow, and the rush of the sea while sailing thru the majestic ocean, this is what you do with the stroke of your brush!"
And, on unpacking a shipped painting:
"What can I say...a bit of a teary mess right now (and that doesn't happen for just anything).  Received the painting today and it is wonderful.  The note you sent to attach to the back is very special, thank you.  Also, your personal note and the blank cards showing some of your work, thank you yet again.  Emailed my husband about receiving all this and told him you were 'a class act'.  In my mind, that is an understatement.  Your sensitivity is so much appreciated.  Something tells me you are a very good soul that sees the wonder in this world and wishes to share it with everyone.  Our world should be thankful for this."

"Gorgeous use of values and color hues to depict moments in the life of her subjects" -Informed Collector
Poppy Balser is a Canadian painter who has always lived withing walking distance of the ocean, mostly on the shores of the Bay of Fundy.  She developed an early connection with the seashore which has deepened as she studies the sea and its environs through her paintings.  She understands that the wild portions of Nova Scotia's environment are a precious resource and seeks to highlight their beauty in her paintings.  She paints outside often to keep her observations fresh and accurate.  Her goal is to transfer the open air feeling of being outside in nature into her studio work.
Balser began the serious pursuit of painting in watercolours in 2003.  She has since followed a path of self directed study, choosing workshops by master painters from across the country.  Over the last few years she has expanded her artistic practice to include oil painting.
Balser tells the behind the scenes stories of her paintings in her newsletter and on her blog.  She seeks with her posts and videos to give her readers a real sense of being on the shores of the Bay of Fundy, or wherever her painting journey has taken her.
