At age 70, Phyllis started her art career!
When Phyllis was a child, she loved to draw.  As an honors student at Garfield High School in Akron, Ohio, she was able to elect art classes. There, she won numerous art awards, Gold Keys, a letter in art, and designed the cover for the 1957 GHS yearbook.
At Kent State University, Phyllis majored in Elementary Education with a minor in art…both strong interests of hers with strong desires to pursue.  But, as a female in the 1950s and 1960s, she was directed to be a teacher.  Phyllis ended up with a 37 year teaching career in the primary grades…not art…married, and had three children.
When Phyllis retired from teaching in 2008, her adult children gave her a retirement gift of a year of art classes at Orange Art Center.  And so it started!  Dino Massaroni, a gifted and successful artist, became her long time instructor.
Painting with oils, Phyllis is able to capture the beauty of landscapes. She enjoys painting still lifes touched with light and shadow and portraits depicting emotion.  She often has work in juried shows and has won many oil painting awards.  Her first painting sale was a plein air painting sold wet off of the easel in Italy where she had traveled with a group of fellow artists on a painting trip.  Her art business, Art by Phyllis, was launched.
