Patricia Walsh (Schmidt) was born and raised in Central New York State and always knew she wanted to be an artist. In furtherance of that goal she attended Boston University and graduated with a BFA in painting in 1973. Boston University had a very classically oriented art program during the 1970’s and the curriculum included hours of daily work from the model, design and composition and the development of a sound practice in methods and materials. Patricia loved the work of Edward Hopper and Winslow Homer and was especially interested in the way these artists placed figures in environments to create a story of sorts behind the image.
After years as a graphic designer for a sign company, Patricia spent nearly two decades working for the Massachusetts Department of Corrections. During that time her children grew up and left home - painting began to fill her life again. Patricia retired as soon as possible and devoted her life to a career as an oil painter. Years of working in the prison system and investigating gangs and sexual assaults within it had given her an enhanced appreciation for the visual expression and connection of individuals and their environments. How a single figure standing in the doorway of a barroom or a child building a sandcastle at the beach can say so much more than its individual components. Living on the South Coast of New England she began exhibiting her work in local galleries, developed a passion for plein air (outdoor) painting and attended figure drawing groups on a regular basis. Although most of the paintings she exhibits in galleries are created in her studio, she spends a considerable amount of time painting studies outside and uses these studies in addition to photo references to craft her larger paintings.
