       I love to paint!   Born and raised on a farm in Missouri, I grew up loving to draw and to paint.  I loved being able to walk and play in the wooded areas and along the creek at the farm.  I enjoyed trying to reproduce what I observed about the natural world and loved the special recognition I received for being able to do art.   A fine arts scholarship enabled me to go to college to earn a B.A. and later an M.A. in Fine Arts from universities in Colorado.  Attracted to the teaching profession, I taught art and later history as well as completing a Ph.D. in European History.  After a teaching career of almost thirty years, I retired to put my energy again into painting full time.  Now that I live in Boulder,  I still find that sense of connectedness to nature on the open space trails and parks of Colorado.  While many of my paintings depict Colorado scenes, I also take my gear on trips throughout the Great Plains, the Southwest, and abroad.  
 An enthusiastic plein-air painter, I work on location and then take studies, sketches, color notes and photo references back to my studio to
 create finished works of art.  Painting is the means of expressing my love for the process and my feelings about portraying the light and color which attracts me to a particular subject.  Most often a painting begins with direct observation—-I look at the scene before me and choose what best to transfer to canvas.  At other times, I already have a composition or subject in mind and find an appropriate expression of that to paint.  In my immediate surroundings, I look for a visual spark along with a personal connection to a subject to get me started.  An impetus could be [...]
