Born and Raised in northern New England, I lived my early childhood in a very Rural area, with lots of open space, wooded areas, fishing streams, farmland, and the like.  As far back as I can remember I liked to draw and read, and I can recall spending hours trying to re-draw comic book characters or movie characters, focusing on science fiction for the most part.  I would draw in pencil or ink in general (some colored pencils and crayons as well), only starting to use other media when I got into an art class in high school.  However, as is often the case, too many other activities took priority as I grew older, and thus it was not until I was in college in Florida in the early 80's did I actually purchase my first set of acrylic paints and canvas boards.  I painted in acrylic for a year or two, then switched to Oils which I've used exclusively since.
Because my career was not fine arts (I am an Engineer by trade), I would normally not do more than a couple of paintings each year.  For many years I would not do more than one at home, but would go back to Vermont during the holidays and then paint 3 or 4 in a row in the  course of a week (my mother-in-law supplied me with materials).  Most of those old paintings are still up there, given away to relatives that wanted them... I never thought they were good enough to actually sell; certainly as I'd never had any real training.  Of course I got a boost to my ego when I sold my first painting, that of a black Lab Retriever, to a woman I worked with at KSC in Florida. That event also got me painting a bit more.
