Nan Sherry lives in the vibrant arts community of Marshall, North Carolina, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Born in 1958, she came to her education in the arts mostly through self-taught techniques and experimentation, as well as creative vocations that included careers as a goldsmith and an architectural designer. While Nan has done charcoal sketching in life sessions over the years, she did not use pastels until June of 2015, when, after a short pastel class at a local community college, she fell in love with the medium. Although she paints en plein air, taking advantage of the beautiful landscapes around her, her true passion is, without a doubt, portrait and figurative painting using live models in her studio. This genre is where she has found her home in the arts. She has only entered two juried shows to date and has received recognition for both: her painting Free Will was accepted into the Appalachian Pastel Society’s annual show, and, in December of 2016, her painting Trevor received an award for Outstanding Pastel in BoldBrush. She was also twice selected for the FAV 15% of BoldBrush entrants. Most recently, Nan had two pastels chosen for the 6th Annual North Carolina Statewide Juried Pastel Exhibition. She is a member of the Portrait Society of America, the Appalachian Pastel Society, and the Southeastern Pastel Society. Through her art Nan seeks to explore, learn, and reach beyond her comfort zones, and above all, to be authentic.
