Biography


In 1971 Michael’s Chinook Helicopter door-gunner orders to Vietnam were averted when he was drawing in the army barracks and through the open door, a soldier walked by looking for someone to fill his position as draftsman. By divine intervention, Michael’s orders were changed to a general draftsperson working for the Battalion HQ Colonel Commander. Michael’s art would now become front and center in the Army and eventually for life.Michael’s creative expression was placed on hold for many years until a dream changed the tide of his life. The dream revealed Michael’s injurious living and lead to an audible call from his loving God in heaven to “paint”. To this day Michael adheres to God’s call. Michael conceives, captures, invents and problem solves with an effort to end with a believable narrative. He indicates that he is always a student: reaching, stretching, straining, and growing ideas and technique into his painting process. Michael has now been painting professionally now for 30 years.Michael is married to Pat Walsh who retired recently from MidAmerica Nazarene University where she served for 33 years, most recently as Dean of Institutional Effectiveness and Registrar. At retirement, she was honored by being granted the status of Faculty Emeriti. Mike and Pat raised two sons’ yielding four wonderful grandchildren into our lives. In their home, they have established the Fine Art studio where Mike creates his work and the Fun Art studio where Pat works in various forms of fiber art.Artist StatementMichael’s philosophical drive in painting is to co-create with his ultimate creator, to magnify God’s light, beauty, and truth in nature in an effort to make an honest and intentional statement.
