 Having grown up on a farm in rural Alabama my parents decided to move further south to the warmer shores of Walton County, Florida, before these beautiful beaches had been discovered by the rest of the world. Back in the 60's one could be on the beach in the summer and not see anyone or any homes. Still on a farm and on the north side of the bay in Freeport, I would drive to our beautiful beaches every chance I had. These places were quiet places and peaceful. I seemed to blend in with the stillness and so as I started to paint, my creations or representations were of still and quiet places.
My professional career was with the FAA as an air traffic controller at Chicago ARTCC and at Memphis ARTCC. Retiring in 1998 I moved back to Florida to be close to my aging parents. My father had always encouraged me artistically, bragging on me as a wonderful father would. With his encouragement and my husband's I started taking art courses in colleges and workshops in the early 1980s wherever I lived. I have studied with David Lefell, Albert Handel, Maggie Price (here and in Italy), Barbara Flowers, Carolyn Anderson, Roger Dale Brown, Anatoly Deverin, and others painting still life, figures, and plein air, in oils and pastels. Many of these are our present day masters and Iím honored to have studied under them.
I was introduced to pastels when I moved to Memphis in the early 80s by a new neighbor who held classes in her place of business. When I saw the beauty and brilliance of this media I was hooked, putting down my brush and picking up the pastel. I have since gotten back into my oils as well and now enjoy both media.
