"I like the challenge of detail and love strong and imaginative color.  I am fascinated by the contrast of sunlight and shadow and generally prefer a close up view to better examine subtle variations in the colors I find in objects, scenes, or occasionally in my imagination."
Mary Van Deman entered the art scene as a watercolor artist in the late 1980's.  She advanced quickly within the watercolor world, winning her first award in a juried exhibition in 1989.  She currently holds Juried Gold Signature and Royal Honor Society status in the Arizona Watercolor Association, and is a Signature Member of the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies.  She is a juried member of the Arizona Artist's Guild and the Arizona Art Alliance, and a member of the Scottsdale Artists League and the Oakwood Artists League of Sun Lakes, AZ where she resides in the winter months.  Her award winning paintings have appeared in juried exhibitions throughout Arizona and beyond.
In recent years Mary has journeyed into the wonderful world of oil painting.  "I find that my background in watercolor has been a significant advantage when moving into oil.  While the process of layering paint is reversed from my previous medium, color theory and elements of design remain the same.  I find a new freedom in oil paint - a new high of spontaneity.  I love the rich,  juicy color and the solid feel of brush on canvas.  I love being able to review and correct in a way that was not possible in watercolor.  What fun it is to find a new direction!"  - M. Van Deman
