Watercolor, Calligraphy
Mary Sue has been interested in art for as long as she remembers.  Her grandfather was an oil painter who encouraged her artistic leanings.  She chose art as her major in college, and attended Ripon College, Minneapolis College of Art & Design and graduated from Rockford College with a Bachelor of Arts in Art.  She gravitated towards drawing, graphics, printmaking and watercolor.
Life has a way of taking us in other directions and Mary Sue found herself managing her family's business, a 1918 historic theatre (used for performing arts) in Rockford, Illinois.  Still in the arts, but not on the creative end, she still dreamed of using her art degree.  She kept her art passion alive by taking evening painting and calligraphy classes.  After 20 years in the performing arts management field, she finally had the time and opportunity to pursue the study of Art Therapy in a Masters Program in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.   That led her into teaching art in an after-school program for three years.
In 2005 Mary Sue moved to California and was able to pick up her paint brushes in 2014.  She began studying watercolor seriously with Sabina Turner, a professional artist in Fiddletown, CA and thereafter taking workshops in abstracts painting,  portrait painting, pet portraits and mixed media.   She attended an international calligraphy conference in 2018 where she rekindled her love of script, brushstroke and modern mark-making.
Currently she is a member of the Sutter Creek Gallery and the Gold Country Artists Gallery in Placerville, CA.  She displays her work locally through "Art in Public Places",  is a member (and secretary) of the Amador Artists Association and California Watercolor Association.  She has entered the Amador County Fair since 2016,     Ironstone Vineyards Spring Art Show and the Sacramento Fine Arts Center shows and has won numerous awards.
