An example of fine art by Mary Montague

I started my painting career with acrylics and oils and then charcoal but, for the last ten plus years, my passion has been pastels. I have studied with local artists as well as at Holyoke Community College, Holyoke Creative Arts and the Guild Art School.  I have been privileged to study with nationally known pastel artists, Albert Handel, Richard McKinley, Liz Haywood Sullivan, Chris Ivers and Jeanne Rosier Smith.
I paint plein air as much as possible but with New England weather, I take it into the studio for the winter.  Good weather finds me painting in my local hill towns and the Pioneer Valley. Trips along the New England coast from Maine to Rhode Island give a dimension to my work as I experience the ocean and seashore.  I have been excited by the light and color of the southwest in my paintings after taking trips to Arizona and New Mexico. I’ve also traveled to visit Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and the Canadian Rockies to capture the unique beauty of these wonderful locations.
The past few years I have taken portrait classes with accomplished portrait artist, Paul Leveille.  I’m loving the challenge of capturing the personalities of friends and family.
My work has been exhibited at local galleries and libraries and at the gallery at The Cooley Dickinson Hospital numerous times.  I was juried into the Connecticut Pastel Society Renaissance Show for 3 years and have been an award winner.   I was also juried into the Academic Artist Association National Exhibition for five different years and I am now a member of the Association.  I am members of the Hilltown Artisan’s Guild, the Hilltown Plein Air Painters, Central Massachusetts Pastel Society and the Connecticut Pastel Society.
