Artist Mary Butler

An example of fine art by Mary Butler

Photo of Mary Butler

Two-track dusty roads, open vistas and Idaho’s rugged beauty inspire Mary’s art. Her childhood on a Southern Idaho Ranch provided views and values that jump-started her artistic vision at an early age.   When a very young child, she drew on walls with chalk, and by the 4th grade her future passion became clear when she stated “I am an artist!”  She then spent forty years as a Registered Nurse and raising a family and now she is finally pursuing her art seriously.
She paints plein air, from memory and photographs in her studio in Boise, where she continues to be inspired by the varied Northwest landscapes.   Her painting style is western expressionism with attention to light and movement in both watercolor and oils.
Mary lives with Mr. Edd who is also an Idaho native craftsman, working primarily in wood craft. Mary’s young grandchildren, who provide many warm hugs, live nearby.
Mary attended the University of Idaho, Lewis Clark State College, and Boise State University earning a Minor in Fine Arts along with her Bachelors of Nursing.  She has studied with Joyce Green, James Blankenship, and Fred Choate locally as well as Robert Moore, Ovanes Berbarian and Stephen Quiller nationally.  She is a member of the Idaho Watercolor Society and the Plein Air Painters of Idaho.
