“I am, therefore I paint”  Mary Axelson
I am a representational watercolor painter whose artistic vision is to celebrate beauty and truth in original fine art paintings. My career goals include both teaching and connecting my art to buyers for the purpose of mutual joy.
Historically, I typically painted in short series, following my inspiration and completing three to four paintings with a similar theme rather than the same subject matter.  A series might include a mix of landscape, floral and cityscape painting with a Parisian theme rather than being focused on landscapes of Paris.
Discovering the joys and challenges of “plein air” (outdoor) painting festivals two years ago led to exponential growth in the quality of my painting.  My best recent paintings are those I created “en plein air.”  I find outdoor settings inspiring and love the opportunity to incorporate the weather and the “feel” of a place into my artwork.  Plein air work forces me to design and compose quickly to avoid “losing the light”, as shadows change and disappear as time elapses.  The very nature of working so quickly also keeps me from overworking a piece.  I have learned to overcome whatever obstacles arise – from high winds to extreme temperatures to unexpected precipitation.
I was thrilled to be awarded Second Place at the 2016 Plein Air-Aitkin Competition by Judge Raleigh Kinney for my watercolor/gouache painting “Summer Dreaming.”
Other honors include 4th place in Watercolor, Gouache, Casein and Tempera at the MN State Fair Fine Arts exhibition (2013) and Honorable Mention in the Bloomington Theatre and Art Center 38th Annual Member’s Juried Show (2014).  In the past three years my work was accepted into national and international art shows such as Arts in Harmony International Show, Elk River, MN (2016), Red River Watercolor Society Annual Juried National Exhibition (2013), and International Society of [...]
