Mary Anne Warner has lived most of her life in Alexandria, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, DC.  She has a permanent exhibition at Studio 15 in the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Olde Town Alexandria. Mary Anne's love of painting began in childhood as she watched her aunt paint in her studio.  By ten years old, Mary Anne began painting the still life.  This remained her primary subject until graduate school.  Her first experience painting en plein air came during a summer graduate program in France.  After graduate school, her landscapes focused on the equestrian life of horse racing and polo in Saratoga, NY. She was drawn to these activities because they happened in the early morning and late afternoon.  It was the light that attracted her.  Her next series of work still dealt with the figure in landscape but in gardens.  This lead to a commission of 5 paintings for the Embassy Suites Hotel in Alexandria, Va.
In 1990, after teaching at Northern Virginia Community College for eight years, Mary Anne began painting full time.  This was also when she began working in pastels.  She now does paintings in both oil and pastel.  Her pastel paintings have won awards in many national shows, including the Pastel Society of America.  Recently, she has expanded her work to include abstractions from nature.
Ideally, Mary Anne begins each painting with a color sketch done on site.  These small pastel paintings are used as reference for larger studio works executed in the studio.  While much of her work has focused on the Potomac River and northern Virginia, she enjoys discovery new landscapes while traveling with her husband photographer David Allison including recent trips to Alaska and southern Utah.
