I spent most of my life working in technology and software development. In 2011, desperate for a more significant creative outlet, I began making jewelry and learning metalsmithing. My husband and I moved to the North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota in 2013 when I needed to recover from an encounter with cancer.
I have always loved the north woods and spent time in the Boundary Waters from the time I was 10 years old. Driving up to Minnesota and reaching the boreal forest area always felt like coming home; an experience I share with many people who love the north woods.
Living so close to Lake Superior was a new experience for me. I felt a new and powerful tie to this ancient inland sea and anytime we leave it, I feel bereft. I love kayaking on the Great Lake and hiking (or snow shoeing) the shorelines of the lake and rivers and the surrounding forests.
My love for our sacred Mother Earth also expresses itself in the yard of our own home that, while small, is still a viable ecosystem for a wildlife habitat full of native plantings that support the birds, bees, butterflies and other insects and small animals that share our lives.
Gradually, living here close to nature, has helped me to heal and I found a new avocation in painting to add to my work in jewelry. My art comes from the place inside me where intuition flows and is profoundly impacted by my love of, and respect for, the natural world. I work in a number of mediums including oil pastels, acrylics and inks and also other water based mediums. While my work has many styles it is characterized by being abstracted and emotive and uses mark making to add complexity and reveal hidden layers.
