Martha, born in Maryland, lived most of her adult life outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  She and her husband moved to North Carolina in 1997.
She was formally trained as a chemist. After Graduate School worked for a chemical company outside New York City, then later academia at Haverford College, Haverford, PA and Villanova University, Villanova, PA.  
During her lifetime she has studied and worked in many mediums - including etching, lithography, weaving, watercolours ( with Dominic DeStefano AWS and Barbara Applegate), silk -screening, and graphics.  
Having moved to North Carolina, she challenged  herself to master oil painting. She studied at Duke University and the North Carolina Museum of Art.   Exploring the modes of oil painting, she studied Plein Air painting with Perry Austin, OPA Master, in NC locations. She became fascinated with the precision of Still Life and the dramatic portrayal of light of Chiaroscuro methods.  She has been greatly influenced by studying with David Leffel, OPA Signature Master, in New Mexico, and the Palette and Chisel in Chicago, IL, and Sherrie McGraw,
OPA Signature Master , in New Mexico and Atlanta, GA. Both are current- day OPA Master Signature artist in Abstract Realism. Recently with Michael Siegel, OPA , at The Arts Students League in New York.  

Abstract Realism is creating a recognizable visual image with a bold play of light , creating lights and shadows, thus leading the viewer through the painting.

Martha has illustrated a children's book, "NOT SO PERFECT POLLY", written and published by Ashley McCain.   She is currently working on illustrating a children's book "HAL THE TREE FROG", written by her husband.   
Martha's work  has been juried into many shows, and has won awards for her work. The most recent was 1st Place in Oils in THE SILVER [...]
