I didn’t set out to convey the connection and synergy of living organisms through my artwork. The ideas came to me very organically through the process of drawing and painting. By putting pencil to paper, or brush to canvas, I tapped into my subconscious. Each new element I create naturally leads to another, and the connections between them evolve – sometimes with surprising results! I am always learning from my artwork. Each new piece has something new to teach me.
I’m inspired by the natural world. I may choose the texture of a gnarly Bristlecone pine tree, the shape of an exotic orchid, or even the structure of a single cell as elements. I want to create works that are filled with energy and life. When I step back and view my work, some of the images are eerily uncommon yet comfortably familiar and seductive. I feel my artwork is symbolic of the delicate balance and interdependency of life. I see these interconnections as a perfectly choreographed dance where each element is singular, yet part of the whole. These are the threads of life we are experiencing.
My artwork has a timely and simple message that we need to be reminded of. We are all connected to each other and to every living organism on this planet. Everything we do affects another life form. I would hope that the viewer sees this in my work and takes away an awareness and sensitivity to how they personally impact life on our planet.
I currently reside in Roseville, California and work as a full-time artist in my studio. My education has spanned over time and location.
