I live in Johannesburg, South Africa, with my husband, 3 children, 2 dogs, 2 cats and 6 chickens.
I studied art at the Johannesburg school of Art, Ballet, Drama and Music from 1983 until 1987. My major subjects there were Painting and Ceramics. I went on to study Fine Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand, but did not complete my 2nd year. I did, however finish a degree in Psychology and English Literature in 2000 (through UNISA).

I pursued my interest in ceramics in 2010 -2012 by studying ceramics in the studios of Anthony Shapiro and Lauren Kaplan, respectively, and being bereft of both (they have both moved away from Johannesburg), have found no ceramic studio to continue with.

Over the years I have explored many themes in my paintings, all of them close to my own experience.

Many of the landscapes are scenes of Johannesburg, one of the largest man-made forests in the world - city-forest. Although Johannesburg is a huge, sprawling city, there are many wild parts still. I also enjoy the juxtaposition of wild, indigenous places, and the exotic plants that are intermingling, creating very mixed natural spaces in an urban setting.

I began my portraits by painting my husband and my children, but have recently expanded into extended family and friends, and some commissions. I remain fascinated by people and portrait painting and depiction of the human form, and what is expressed in the subtleties of expression and gesture. I’m currently exploring themes of self-depiction and the choices made in ‘selfies’ as they become an ever-larger social media phenomenon.
I have painted many small 20x20cm portraits for the corporate environment (for my client CN&CO). I find I enjoy the small format - many of my earlier works are much bigger - and have expanded my work in that format into a series of ancestor [...]
