Biography


BiographyMarilyn Howard Flinn has a B.A. in Art from Mundelein College in Chicago. She has continued her study with prominent artists in the U.S. and in Europe, including Daniel Greene, Judith Carducci, Allan Banks and Hodges Soileau. She has participated in many juried exhibits, winning awards for her landscapes, seascapes, still lifes and portraits. Her paintings are in private collections throughout the U.S. and in Europe. She resides Sarasota, Florida with her husband Bill. Marilyn is a member of Oil Painters of America, Plein Air Society of Florida Sun Coast,  and American Impressionist Society.Artist StatementPainting makes me intensely alive.  While painting plein air I become immersed in the scene and when painting a portrait I totally focus on the person before me.  I respond to the shapes, the colors, the effects of light and shadow.  I am delighted.  The process of creating an image that is beautiful or mysterious or shows nature’s energy inspires me.  The process always makes me want to be a better painter.  I want to share the beauty and wonder of nature with viewers and contribute to a deeper appreciation of that beauty.Seeing a subject, I observe it from a variety of angles. I consider the effect of the light.  I design a composition that emphasizes what captivates me.  I then choose the size of the canvas and the most effective color palette.  The weather, the time of day, the warmth or coolness of the colors I see, the brilliance or mistiness of the day all affect the mood I want to portray.I paint plein air landscapes and portraits.  Painting from life is an on-going exploration of light, color, mood and emotion.  My painting adventures have carried me to Greece, Italy, France, Ireland and across the United States.  With this abundance of subject matter, I continue to [...]
