Biography

"I paint for the challenge each piece provides. A sunset over the water, a special "look" a pet or person has which makes them unique. The inspiration for my paintings is the calming influence of a seascape or landscape, or the feeling that the dog is in the room with me for my pet portraits. My realistic style in oils or pastels uses earth tones of nature and depth of color to portray the overall feeling of the piece. I only hope that the viewers find the emotion I try to convey with each painting."

Lou is a self-taught artist in pastels, oils, acrylics and watercolors. This all happened after spending 23 years in corporate accounting and information systems. After moving to the coast of North Carolina Lou and her husband, Porter, opened Arts & Things on the Morehead City waterfront. It was then that she started to concentrate on her love of painting. She strives to "hear the dog bark" in her pet portraits and the people "talking" with her realistic portraits. In her landscapes and seascapes she strives to evoke the "I want to be there" response from the viewer.Although specializing in pet portraits, she has also won several awards for her seascape and landscape paintings. Lou has been featured in publications such as "The Dog Owner's Guide to Washington", the 2008 "Celebrating Art" calendar, and Crystal Coast Magazine. Her paintings hang in private and corporate collections.
