The Artist Says:

Artist Statement
A gardener at heart, flowers bring me great joy and endless inspiration with their myriad of exquisite colors, textures and shapes. Being a floral artist is the perfect combination to express both of my passions, painting and gardening.  My goal is to capture the unique qualities and delicacy of the flowers and delight my viewers senses with their intrinsic beauty.  Monet said it best, "I perhaps owe becoming a painter to flowers."

Biography

Lois Engberg paints with oils in the alla prima style and is best known for her floral still lifes. Many of her works are characterized by her careful choreography of exquisite flowers accented with her unique collectibles that she's spent years acquiring.

Lois's earliest influence came from her mother, also an artist, who instilled in her a love of painting and gardening from an early age. The garden's vast array of colors and textures offers endless inspiration.   Painting from life, Lois sets up still life arrangements in her studio and works quickly to capture the delicacy of the flowers before they fade. Balancing the freshness of quick bold strokes while still achieving the intricacy of each bloom is a skill that has taken years to accomplish.

Lois earned her Liberal Arts Degree from Salisbury University in 1981, and has devoted herself to painting full time since the sale of her home care business in 1996.  She has learned from masters both past and present and has studied with some of today’s top traditional artists. Lois's early education included workshops with artists Robert Johnson and David Leffel, learning many of the classical realist techniques.  Further study with floral artists Kathy Anderson and Michael Klein helped refine her skills and develop her own alla prima style of painting. Most recently, Lois has expanded her interest to landscape painting and has worked with highly skilled plein air painters Kathleen Dunphy and Mark Bodges to hone her skills.

She currently paints from her studio in Salisbury, Maryland and her work is exhibited in galleries throughout the east coast and in private collections across the country.  She enjoys painting in plein air, drawing much inspiration from her many travels abroad.
