The Artist Says:

I’m restless, but my paintings are calm.   As an avid outdoor photographer, I keep life lively with travel adventures, shooting photos that make great painting references. I’m particularly drawn to dramatic lighting situations in the landscape and am lucky to have a studio in the mountains of Colorado that lets me explore the changing cloudscapes passing by my window.

Composition, unique perspective, and depth perception are important to my painting process, as are texture and color. I’m fond of painting many layers with a combination of thick and thin paint and glazes. While my paintings can be described as representational, I’m drawn to the abstraction and the story within the scene. Harmony and rhythm enhance the metaphors brushed in paint, and as I move forward I’m concentrating on atmosphere, abstraction and story.

Currently, I am exploring the introspective aspects of painting with mentor, Ron Hicks, who is pushing me to investigate the intricacies within values. And I spend as much time as possible outside, painting en plein air in Colorado and California simply for the love of discovery.

Through the process of painting, I have found that portraying the power of nature has a calming effect, giving me a unique sense of connection and reverence for dramatic lighting in the landscape. My hope is that my admiration of the environment speaks to fellow curious travelers who love spending time exploring the natural a Story                                                                              Petrie Bunch began recording life snapping photos at age 10.
