Lesley Underwood specializes in paintng from life; whether it is a floral still life, plein air landscape or portrait.  She tries to capture the feeling of the scene and fill it with life and color.  "I love so many different kinds of paintings and palettes from a limited tonal palette, a tonal colorist palette to full on color.  Sometimes I want to paint with a subdued tonal palette, but in the end, I  am always seduced by color."  People love Lesley's clean colors that seem to make the subject jump off the canvas and come to life.  "When I look at a scene, the first thing I focus on is the light,  the color of the light.  Then I look at the temperature and shape of the shadows.  What excites me is how the light strikes my subject.  How it rakes across the form."   Although Lesley has a full time appraising business, she still manages to maintain a rigorous painting and show schedule.  She paints regularly with the Los Gatos Plein Air Painters and her painting buddies, works on still lifes in her studio and squeezes in drawing, portrait painting and enters a few shows to boot.   In 2009, Lesley was a juried artist and won best architecture at the Alllied Art Paint Out in Meno Park, CA.   Lesley was again juried in and won 2nd place People's Choice award at the Allied Arts Paint Out in Menlo Park, Ca. in 2011.    In 2010, 2011 and 2012, Lesley was juried in the Los Gatos Art Association show and won honorable mention for "Flower Power".  "Flower Power" is a plein air painting at the Palo Alto Community Gardens.  Lesley is always striving to develop and grow as an artist by challenging herself with different subjects and complex painter issues.  "I try to let my eye lead me not my head.  When I see something that strikes me, no matter how [...]
