Biography

Laura Valenzuela is a Registered Nurse and has worked as a Nurse Practitioner in Bakersfield, California. She began her second career in art in the 1990s by taking tole painting classes. As time passed, she had saturated her family with gifts of painted birdhouses and plaques and turned to oil painting.

After years of painting local landscape scenes in Bakersfield, Laura had the good fortune to sign up for a three day workshop at the Bakersfield Museum of Art, taught by North Carolina artist, Sharon Schwenk (www.schwenkart.com). It was during that class that Laura learned many of the basic skills and techniques that had previously been missing in her repertoire.

Over time, Sharon became a friend to Laura by her generous gift of long-distance mentoring that encouraged her artistic growth and love of painting. Artists are not born knowing how to paint and learn their skills by instruction from generous teachers and by studying the art of other artists.  Some of the artists who have been an inspiration to Laura are Richard Schmid, Kathryn Stats and Matt Smith.

Laura grew up in Ojai, California. The beautiful mountains and majestic oak trees of Ojai had a profound influence on Laura's love of nature and appreciation for the large variety in California landscape. Nowadays, she particularly enjoys painting landscapes of scenes throughout Kern County and coastal California.

Laura is currently a member of the Bakersfield Art Association and an associate artist member of the California Art Club.
