The Artist Says:

Artists’ Statement/Bio Laura Frykman
I’ve been studying and creating art for 37 years, including coursework atMCAD, the Univ. of Minnesota, and the Minnesota River School of FineArt, in addition to masters’ work in Spirituality and Art. Besides creatingpastel landscapes, I work in oils, do 3D collage, murals, and abstractpieces. I teach studio and plein air painting privately, and I have aMasters of Art Education from the University of Minnesota, with a
K-12 MN teaching license.
I’m currently seeking ways to deepen the content of my work, meldingpersonal imagery and an expressive style, with my eye for line andrealistic detail. Even in realism, I am really grappling with a movingequilibrium of opposite qualities: bright vs. dull, clear vs. obscure, stillness and movement, harmony within randomness.
I paint out of awe at the exquisite effects of light, out of thesatisfaction of knowing depth in space, and my place in alandscape that is at once literal and spiritual.  I paint to share myjoy at participating in the colors and rhythms around me, that dancethrough me as I channel them onto paper. I believe that good art is noless than a slice of life given focused, honest thought and shared visually.

Biography

I call it Expressive Realism. I paint to explore & express the playful effects of light, rhythm & color I see...,blended and balance within the music of my heart. The longer I paint, the more my singing, dancing and jazz listening inform my compositions... as I pursue the flow state; the Chi.

Within the liveliness of nature I seek a still depth.   Within silence I seek the harmonies of spirit revealed by one place, at one moment in time.

I have 38 years of painting experience, including atelier oil portraiture at the MN River School of Fine Art, advanced painting at the Womens Art Institute, MCAD, a Masters of Art Education from the University of Minnesota, and a MN k-12 Teaching License.  My interior work is informed by Masters level study of religion & spirituality at United Theological Seminary, and 2 years of Tai Chi practice. I was a professional master floral designer for 12 years.

Currently I teach plein air and studio painting in pastels and oils out of my studio.

I create oil & pastel landscapes en plein air and in the studio,  plus florals, murals, collage/assemblage... and I keep a sketch journal of local musicians playing, live.
