Artist Statement
I am interested in elements of nature as they move into abstraction.  I am drawn to the graphic abstract elements in flora and landscapes. The interplay between figure ground relationships using forms found in nature intrigues me.  The patterns and negative spaces of these natural shapes are endlessly interesting to me.   I am particularly drawn to brilliant colors and clean lines.  Manipulating the scale of the natural forms is also important to my work.  The cropped photographic images I work from are often no larger than a few inches square while in my paintings these forms are blown up many times.  Once ‘supersized’, these previously diminutive natural forms become iconic.
I work primarily in oils in the studio and in gouache or pastels for sketches in the field.  Using fragments of photographs, I develop the cropped image into a bold, colorful composition that is still rooted in figuration but avoids ‘the tyranny of reality’.  I prefer to use a square format because it forces the viewer to view the natural subject matter more abstractly.
My work is influenced by nineteenth century ukiyo-e Japanese wood block prints with their lack of perspective or shadow, flat areas of strong color and compositional freedom in placing the subject off-center. Contemporary influences on my art include Alex Katz, David Hockney and Wolf Kahn.  Other favorite artists whose work I am drawn to include Joan Mitchell, Richard Diebenkorn, Henri Matisse and Vincent Van Gogh.
