Kerry Kupferschmidt - Artist Statement

Watercolor has been my primary media for many years, since studying for a B.F.A. degree received at the University of Minnesota in 1977. I studied watercolor with Malcom Myers and Mary Abbott during my time at the U of M. I enjoy the spontaneity of watercolor and readily accept the challenges it presents. I have been more determined of late at growing my skills and improving my work. I have benefited greatly from workshops with David Smith and Andy Evansen in recent years. I am a member of Central Minnesota Watercolorists in St. Cloud, NorthStar Watermedia in the Twin Cities, Red River Watercolor Society, as well as the Crossings Art Alliance in Brainerd.
My paintings usually start with  a strong concept, inspired by sketches and photographs of a scene that strikes me as interesting. My best work has a strong design element in addition to a painterly, joyful expression of a scene or wildlife. The Minnesota landscape is a favorite subject, including the Great Lakes area as well as local scenes in St. Cloud. Recently I have been working on a series of city scenes expressing the unique character of European architecture. I was inspired by a trip with my wife to Prague, Paris and river towns in Germany in 2018. Recent travels include Alaska and a trip to Great Falls, Montana. But simple local farm scenes inspire me as well, if the composition is interesting.
My interest in architecture grew from 24 years as an illustrator for architects and builders, focusing on custom homes in Minnesota. I am now phasing that work out in favor of full [...]
