Kay Crain was born in  Illinois into an artistic family. Her grandfather Roy was a painter and her great uncle, Joseph Reidsema, was a plein air painter in California and Michigan in the 30’s through the 50’s. Her mother painted as well so art supplies were available and creativity encouraged from an early age.
Although primarily self taught, through the years ,she has studied with a number of teachers such as Peggi Kroll Roberts , Kim English, 
, Carolyn Anderson, Dawn Whitelaw , James Richards and the late Charles Sovek.
Her degree from Western Illinois University (1972) is in English (secondary) education. In 1986 she completed her studies to become a Registered Nurse, and worked for thirty years in her specialty, Maternal Fetal medicine, primarily in labor and delivery..
One of Her favorite subjects to paint is people, and she does many portrait commissions. She is always fascinated by the endless combination of features that make people unique.
Although growing up in the flatlands of Illinois, she adores the beach and it is featured prominently in many of her paintings. She also fell in love with the mountains of Colorado and Utah and has done several landscapes depicting them.
Her paintings are represented in one corporate and many private collections in the United States and Europe.
 Her artistic heroes are Cecilia Beaux,  John Singer Sargent ,  Frank Weston Benson and Joaquin Sorolla.
She is a juried member of American Impressionist Society, Portrait Society of America , Missouri Impressionist Society and Oil Painters of America. She is also the Co-Ambassador for Missouri for The Portrait Society of America.
Kay lives and works in Defiance Missouri near st. Louis with her husband (and framer) of 48 years, Larry.
